Emergency Communications and Assistance Procedures for NMSU International Travelers
Are you traveling to another country as part of your academic or outreach work? If so, you should know the following in case there is an emergency:
Prior to International Travel:
- Submit your travel authorization form and ensure the emergency contact information is accurate.
- Visit https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/emergencies/what-can-you-do-crisis-abroad.html
- Register with the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This will enable you to receive any relevant safety information (environmental, political) of the location of your intended travel: https://step.state.gov/step/
- Look for any current travel advisories or warnings in the area of intended travel: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories.html/
- Locate the nearest U.S. embassy in the area and make note of contact information: https://www.usembassy.gov/
In an Emergency:
If you experience an emergency, first get to safety and call local police, fire, or medical personnel for help. If you need assistance from NMSU, you can call the NMSU Emergency Dispatch Center (1-575-646-3311) at any time, day or night. The emergency services dispatcher will help get you in touch with appropriate people from NMSU so they can provide further assistance.
